Alleged Lakewood arsonist described as knife-wielding madman

LAKEWOOD, OH (WOIO) - An act of vengeance is what fire authorities are calling the apartment fire that has displaced 20 people in Lakewood Friday, Feb. 21.

Some residents were forced outside in their bathrobes and others weren't wearing shoes or socks.

The Lakewood fire chief responded to call at 14814 Clifton Avenue just before 4:30 p.m. that there was a man wielding a knife and threatening to attack anyone who approached the complex or attempted to go inside.

Fire officials believe the man intentionally set the fire because he was being evicted.

The fire was quickly extinguished and crews remained on the scene to ensure there weren't any hot spots.

He was taken by force by police and fire authorities to undergo a mental health evaluation at Lakewood Hospital.

Amongst those displaced include families with young children, even an infant.

The City of Lakewood and the local Red Cross have made temporary arrangements for the residents who did all escape unharmed.

The name of the alleged arsonists hasn't been released.
