TWINSBURG, OH (WOIO) -

Cpl. Joshua A. Brenner was awarded the Purple Heart at Twinsburg City Hall on Monday.

Brenner, 23, received the award after he was wounded while serving in Afghanistan in December of 2011.

Brenner was awarded the medal by Lieutenant Colonel Pete McAleer and a group of Marines from the Ohio-based 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines regiment.

He served with the 9th Engineer Support Battalion during his four-year enlistment and was deployed to Afghanistan from Oct. 29, 2011 to June 4, 2012. The envoy he was driving with was hit three separate times by an IED, with the third explosion on Dec. 12, 2011.

Brenner's wife, Allyssa, also served as a Marine in Afghanistan at the same time as her husband. The couple is expecting their first child.

The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the U.S. armed forces who are wounded by an enemy in battle, or given to family members in the name of those who are killed in action or die from wounds. It is specifically a combat decoration.
