LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A travel advisory is in effect Monday throughout portions of Kentucky, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Crews were plowing roads throughout KYTC Districts 4 and 5.

"Salt and calcium were laid down on primary routes Sunday morning and afternoon," according to Chris Jessie, spokesman for KYTC District 4, which includes Breckinridge, Grayson, Green, Hardin, Hart, LaRue, Marion, Meade, Nelson, Taylor and Washington Counties. "As temperatures fall into the lower 20s and single digits tonight, motorists must understand that chemical treatments become ineffective. Jessie said plowing is the only option to clear roads when temperatures reach such cold temperatures.

"KYTC road crews plowed their routes during the overnight hours," said District 5 spokeswoman Andrea Clifford. District 5 includes Bullitt, Franklin, Henry, Jefferson, Oldham, Shelby, Spencer and Trimble Counties. [Road crews] will resume salting now that we have some traffic on the highways to help work the salt into the snow and help with the melting process."

Clifford said lane markings would be obscured in many places by snow on the pavement, making driving especially hazardous. In addition, blowing snow is quickly recovering roads crews already plowed.

A Kentucky State Police dispatcher said just under two dozen big rigs had slid off or jackknifed along Interstate 65 north of Elizabethtown. No one was injured in any of the accidents. The dispatcher said the trucks couldn't make it up the hill to E'town and were being pushed after they were righted.
