Bars could lose liquor license over smoking fines

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Some Ohio bars and restaurants set to renew their liquor license were recently denied because they owe thousands of dollars in smoking fines.

Ohio's Liquor Control Commission says the facilities are disregarding the laws of the state, giving reason for the commission to deny liquor permits to those with repeated violations and unpaid fines.

Toledo area establishments could be sitting in a similar situation for resisting efforts to enforce the law.

Right now, $320,000 is due in unpaid smoking violations in Lucas County alone.

Some of the biggest offenders include Delaney's Lounge, the Mayfly Tavern and the Rip Cord.

The former owner of Delaney's Lounge says the move by the commission won't reduce the number of unpaid fines.

"My immediate answer - it's not going to make any difference. We're not going to pay. I will fight this til the day I die. It's not right. It's not right," said Bill Delaney.

Delaney went on to say the move by the Liquor Control Commission not to renew permits because of smoking fines hurts local businesses.

Lucas County's environmental director says he is pleased with the commission's work to hold owners responsible for not making good on their fines. He also said the smoking ban has never been about the money, but rather an attempt to create a healthy, smoke-free environment for the people of Ohio.
