Funeral plans have been set for five members of a Gilbert family who were killed late last month in a crash involving three vehicles along eastbound Interstate 10 north of Picacho Peak.

Services will be held Thursday, April 10 at 10 a.m. at Mission Community Church at 4450 E. Elliot Rd.

DPS said the family would like to extend an invitation to the good Samaritans that stopped to help at the scene of the crash on Saturday, March 29.

"That meant a lot to him," DPS spokesman Raul Garcia said.

The victims, all from Gilbert, are identified as:

  • Shelly Renee Blackmore, 49
  • Danielle Blackmore, 20
  • Tyler Curley, 12
  • Kayla Curley, 9
  • Breanne Curley, 7

A pickup truck driven by Tracy William Blackmore, 47, of Gilbert, was traveling westbound near milepost 213 when the front left tire tread separated, according to DPS spokesman Raul Garcia.

Blackmore lost control of the pickup, and it traveled left across the depressed dirt median and then entered the eastbound traffic lanes of I-10, where it collided at an angle with an 18-wheeler, Garcia said.

A third vehicle, a passenger car, struck the pickup truck, Garcia said.

Tracy Blackmore was airlifted from the scene and is in critical condition at Maricopa Medical Center.

The remaining five passengers traveling in the pickup truck were pronounced dead at the scene.

On Monday, the father of the three children, who also lost his mother and sister in the crash, talked about his loss.

"I'm not burying one of them," said Larry Curley, through tears. "I'm burying my whole family."

Curley said his son Tyler loved baseball and his daughters, Kayla and Breanne, were cheerleaders.

"They were an absolutely beautiful family," said Curley's aunt, Kim Tricarico. "My sister (Shelly Blackmore) loved her grandbabies, his children."

An account has been set up at Bank of America to help pay for the five funerals. Donations can be made at any branch to the Blackmore and Curley Memorial Fund.

The driver of the 18-wheeler suffered minor injuries and was taken to Casa Grande Regional Hospital and transferred to Chandler Regional Hospital.

The co-driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.

The driver and passenger of the third vehicle were not hurt.
