SYLVANIA TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The snow may have melted after the warmer temperatures moved in, but now you can see more damage from the winter weather.

Several mailboxes have been damaged or destroyed by plows along McCord Road between Central and Brint, but is there anything you can do about it?

"The first time it happened my good mailbox was gone," said Ruth Noonan, a Sylvania Township resident.

The mailbox Noonan spent about $70 on is not in front of her house, but laying in front of her garage. The top is cracked and the bottom is broken, all from the impact of snow being plowed off McCord Road from a Lucas County plow driver.

"It was just hanging there and I said, 'Well, there we go.' Because the year before, it had been attacked a little bit, but we managed to save it," explained Noonan. "Then this time it was gone, hanging."

She had to pick up her mail at the post office for about five weeks.

Across the street is another damaged mailbox down on the ground. The county's road maintenance department says this happened all over the county this winter.

As long as it's a road maintained by Lucas County, call 419-213-2892 and they'll fix or replace it. But you won't get your old mailbox replaced. You'll get a standard metal one, like the one they put up for Noonan in February.

But that one also came down! How long did it last?

"Two days. I went out and you can't close the lid at all," said Noonan.

Noonan's grandson wired it together as best he could. The lid won't close, but at least the mailman can drop the mail inside. She's fairly confident the snow won't be coming back and she's planning to put up another mailbox.

Noonan likes how the county is willing to help, but she thinks if the plows just slowed down a little, this problem could be avoided.
