KENT, OH (WOIO) -

The entire Kent State University campus went into lockdown Wednesday, April 2 after a shot of gunfire sounded outside of a building. The accused shooter is 24-year-old Kent freshman Quavaughntay Tyler. Police say he got into an argument with two women, then clumsily pulled a gun and shot himself in the hand.

Police say Tyler was on probation for theft and was a suspect in other campus thefts.

On the following Thursday students were still jittery as they headed back to class. Inside Bowman Hall students were talking about the night before and the police zooming around.

The gun fired in Bowman Hall at 8 p.m. and reports of a suspected shooter induced campus-wide panic. Text messages and social media alerted students to say inside. When you hear "shooting" and "Kent State" anyone would automatically assume the worst.

Arbrion Chambliss and Jazmine Woods were on their way to the library when they got the warning.

"We heard sirens. "I was shaking and I turned into a cocoon,"  the ladies recalled.

Relief came at 11:30 p.m. when police arrested the suspect Quavaugntay Tyler off campus.

Students at Kent State's campus were shocked when the learned the shooter was 24-year-old Quavaugntay Tyler.

"I wouldn't have thought that it would've been him," Chambliss said.

She saw Tyler often.

She told 19 Action News, "I always just saw him with a group of guys conversing, I never noticed anything out of the ordinary."

Students assured that despite what happened, they still feel safe on campus.
