Monday, United Airlines informed the City of Cleveland and the Cleveland Airport System (CAS) that they have formally notified their employees of their future operational and staffing needs as it pertains to reductions in service they previously announced at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE).

Included in the notification, United announced they will be consolidating all flight operations into Concourse C and will no longer operate flights out of Concourse D. This will be effective of June 5, 2014.

The airport management team says they will continue working with United and AIRMALL to determine the impact this will have on the airport.
In addition to eliminating Concourse D, hundreds of employees will be laid off.
According to a spokesman with United, "About 430 airport operations employees are affected by the reduced staffing. Earlier this year, we announced that we were reducing the amount of flying here, and we must take the necessary step of reducing staffing. Today we began officially notifying impacted employees. As part of the notification, we outlined their options, including opportunities at other airports throughout our system, early out programs, and our continued job matching and job fairs we are conducting with the city of Cleveland. This is a challenging time for our employees, and we continue to assist them and provide support during this difficult transition."

Furthermore, in the coming weeks, the airport will develop strategies to mitigate the impact on existing airline partners and concessionaires.

Over the next few months, Hopkins management will review the facility to develop a plan for optimal usage and customer service.

The City's Workforce Development Office continues to collaborate with United to aid in transitioning employees affected by United's staffing reductions.
