Chief goes to town meeting to answer questions, then avoids them

Ed Gallek questions Chief Williams Ed Gallek questions Chief Williams

Tuesday, reporter Ed Gallek confronted Cleveland's police chief asking what many of you want to know; Why the sudden shake up in the police command staff?

Chief Calvin Williams went to a big town meeting to answer questions, but wouldn't answer Gallek's questions about why a popular west side commander isn't in charge anymore.

We're trying to end the mystery of Second District Commander Keith Sulzer's sudden resignation. Sulzer was wildly popular for his approach to neighborhood safety. He moved down in rank just after the new chief took over. So why the secrecy?

Dozens packed a meeting looking for the same answers. Politics? Fallout from this massive police chase that turned deadly?

The police union president says officers liked the commander. The chief came to answer questions and called Sulzer a friend but the crowd groaned. The chief then talked about private conversations during the commander's job assessment.

The chief said he and the new commander would always be available.
