Editorial: Better Lakefront Parks

(WOIO) -

Edgewater Beach is about to get a facelift. Improvements will be made to the beach, the trails, the entrance, and especially to the restrooms. Now all of this is being done under new management and taxpayers should be glad that the state turned over ownership of Edgewater and five other lakefront parks to the Metroparks.

The parks had long been poorly maintained by the state. Ah, the difference was immediate. Edgewater is now cleaner and safer.

The hope is to bring larger crowds back to the parks. One plan is to stage summer concerts where beer and wine would be sold. Now the neighbors near Euclid beach are fighting that plan saying alcohol goes against the family friendly tradition of the now-closed Euclid Beach amusement park.

Well, we side with the Metroparks. Adults attending an outdoor concert ought to be allowed to enjoy a beer or two. It all comes down to oversight and enforcement and the Metroparks have proven that they run a tight ship.
