MENTOR, OH (WOIO) -

A brave Painesville Marine was honored Saturday, April 12, 2014.

23-year-old Marine Lance Corporal Andy Nowacki was on his 2nd Iraqi tour when, just two weeks away from coming home, he was killed by an improvised explosive device (IED) in the line of duty.

His legacy as a brave Marine and Grand River Police Officer was carried on at this evening's 9th Annual Heroes for Andy Gala. The fundraiser is to support other young men and women studying law enforcement. To date 24 scholarships have been awarded to honor his service.

Nowacki's parents Sheila and Denis Nowacki have hosted the event for nine years now in honor of their son. They said the spirit of patriotism, and the vibe and energy of the volunteers motivates them to keep the event going year after year.

Our Dawn Kendrick had the honor of being this year's emcee. The gala was hosted at the LaMalfa party center in Mentor. Anyone can donate or become a volunteer of the foundation.
