Jim Tressel is one of three finalists for president at the University of Akron

Tressel is currently the Executive Vice President for Student Success at the university.

The two other finalists are Dr. Ronald A. Nykiel, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Dr. Scott L. Scarborough, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Toledo.

Tressel is the only candidate without a doctoral degree.

Next week, each finalist will have the opportunity to tour the campus, interview with faculty, students and trustees and participate in an open forum.

Tressel is a known leader on the football sidelines, but can the former Ohio State coach lead a university?

Some students are concerned that Tressel may be biased toward athletic needs.

"I don't know how much a football coach is gearing up to fund the art programs," said Will Hamiliton, a graduate student at Akron.

Others are confident that Tressel has the skills, despite his sports background.

"I think he brings a lot to the table and if you have a decision between two schools and Jim Tressel is the president of yours, it kind of makes a big difference," said student Dennis Glow.

In his application Tressel wrote:

"The university would be better served by a leader who has been "on the ground" with the current team, a leader who is aware of the challenges."

Students confirm Tressel is active in his current role.

"I see him all the time on campus and he approaches me and my friends," said student Anna Demjanjuk.

Tressel also applied to be President at Youngstown State.

The University of Akron Board of Trustees will make a final decision after the finalists have completed their campus visit.
