Jim Tressel readies for next step in bid for UA Presidency

James Tressel James Tressel

Former Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel spent Thursday on the University of Akron campus interviewing and meeting with various groups including faculty, staff, students and community members. Tressel is one of three finalists for the Presidency of the University.

He also participated in an open forum where he answered questions.  He is currently an executive VP at the University.

"I think I learned a lot in 37 years of doing one thing, most of the skill sets are transferable," said Jim Tressel. "I think if you study some of the areas of a similar size of Akron that are really doing well.  They're the ones that have brought the education gap tighter."

Other finalists for the post are Ronald A. Nykiel, now Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Scott L. Scarborough, now Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Toledo.

"In higher education there is an inherent tension between academics and athletics.
A goal has to be that we have to try to bring down our amount of spending on athletics and raise our amount of revenue," added Jim Tressel.

In all, 19 people applied for the job.

Tressel has said in the past that the University needs more than a leader who can, "hit the ground running," but rather one who is on the ground with the University's current team.

"I am confident that I am the right leader to bridge the transition from Dr. Proenza's accomplished 15 year tenure to UA's new era of excellence," Tressel said in his application to the University's Board of Trustees. "Put simply, I believe I am the right leader for this time."
