CARIBBEAN SEA (WAFB) -

A Denham Springs, LA couple celebrating their honeymoon on a 7-day cruise in the Caribbean witnessed a rescue last night that quite possibly saved the lives of 39 people.

Wednesday night, the Carnival Dream cruise ship altered its course to make a stop between Grand Cayman and Jamaica to help a small boat in distress. Aboard the small boat were 34 men and five women, all adults, from Cuba.

Officials with Carnival say the 39 people had been adrift at sea for several days. The honeymooners, Eric and Danelle Agena, were on their balcony on the 12th deck of the ship and saw the entire rescue.

Eric says the Cuban's boat was taking on water and the engine had stopped. "The Cubans were brought aboard the Carnival Dream and placed in the crew quarters, given medical assistance and food. The U.S. Coast Guard advised the ship to transport the refugees to Montego Bay, Jamaica," said Eric.

Montego Bay, Jamaica was the next stop for the cruise ship.

Officials with Carnival say rescuing mariners in distress is a longtime tradition of the company and are extremely proud of the officers and crew on the ship for coming to the rescue of the group.

Eric and his new wife Danelle were married on April 12, 2014. This is his first cruise as an adult and Danelle's second. They are currently on an excursion in Jamaica and were able to provide details about the rescue through Facebook.

Carnival Dream is currently on a seven-day Caribbean cruise that departed New Orleans on Sunday, as part of its year-round schedule of week-long Caribbean voyages from that port.
