Sometimes we see kids trapped in cycles that are hard to break, and they need to learn how to take control of their own future. That's where some local young women come in, helping younger girls see their potential. The latest Romona's Kids are in Akron.
We've seen the disturbing video recently, a huge beatdown in a Cleveland high school and a vicious attack on a learning disabled young woman. An Akron young women's group is working to prevent this kind of violence, while developing teenage girls' confidence and self-esteem.
They're called Fadia, which means "protect others."
The mentors hold meetings every Thursday at an Akron YWCA, but keep in touch all week with uplifting text messages.
"Some have been molested, abused, or raped, and some don't have food to eat at home," said Fadia mentor Yvette Thompson.
The group also gives back to the community.
"We help with the battered women's shelter, go volunteer there, donate clothes, donate food," said Fadia mentor Lacole Odums.
"Every March, we have our Speak Up Speak Out event, with free haircuts and free food; we have talent shows, fashion shows, and mentors talking to the kids to give them advice," said mentor Amanda Turman. "We just want our young girls to grow up very successful; this is our next generation so if we don't invest in them then we're not investing in ourselves."
"Everything we do for the young girls, comes directly out of our personal finances, and we travel using our personal cars, so we have a GoFundMe page (http://www.gofundme.com/7ok9mc) and we would love to get the support, any denomination helps," said mentor Shalonda Lee. "We would like to get a 16 passenger van."
"With us doing this on a day to day basis, you never know when something is going to happen, you never know when they're going to run away from home, you never know when one of them will try to commit suicide," Thompson said. "So this isn't just having a Thursday and a Friday session, it's more or less Monday through Sunday, it's all day every day."
