LAKEWOOD, OH (WOIO) -

The Lakewood High School Band Director was charged Wednesday with one count of sexual battery in connection with a student.

The band director is Nathan Harris and per standard protocol, Harris has been placed on administrative leave and banned from the property during the investigation.

"After what happened, I wouldn't want him as a teacher," said one student.

The students at Lakewood High are still reacting to the news that Harris has been arrested.

A ranger in the Rocky River Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks saw two people in the back of a car about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday night.

"Two subjects were inside that vehicle. A 27-year-old male and a 16-year-old male engaged in sexual conduct. Officers decided to investigate further," said Capt. Jack Hall

Then Rangers arrested Harris.

No one answered the door at the Lakewood address where Harris lives about a mile away from the high school.

"I had band with him. He was like nice but sometimes he'd get cranky," said another student.

Students told us they got details about the case on the school district's website, and they said a lot of their classmates were talking about the incident today.

"I'm kind of surprised actually because he didn't seem like he would do that," another student told us.

Counselors will be on hand to offer students counseling and support on Thursday, June 12, and Friday, June 13, from 8:30 a.m-3:30 p.m. in Lecture Hall 2 at Lakewood High School.

"Our thoughts are with the student and the student's family," said Superintendent Jeff Patterson. "We will be working with them to provide appropriate counseling and support services as needed and we will provide services to any other student who may need counseling and support as well."

District officials will also be conducting its own investigation of the employee.

School officials encourage students to cease any contact with the Lakewood High Band Director at this time and for students and parents to report any concerns they may have to Dr. Christine Palumbo, Director of Student Services, 216-529-4201.
