(WMC) - Shelby County Commissioner and juvenile court clerk candidate Henri Brooks released a letter to the public on Tuesday.

It follows after a residency investigation launched into the commissioner, the news Brooks resigning from her job after a simple assault arrest, and her controversial comments about "minority contractors" during a commission meeting.

Brooks made this public statement:

This is the most important election we have had in Shelby County in a very long time. This is our last, best window of opportunity to break the Juvenile Court's school-to-prison pipeline. I want you to know that what has been portrayed in the media is not what happened. However, I sincerely regret that the detractors and those opposed to real change have used this as an opportunity to take the focus off the critical issues affecting our children at Juvenile Court and therefore minimizing all that is at stake in this election.

I want you to know that justice is being targeted, because we are standing up and fighting for families, children and women and for justice throughout the system. I am speaking truth to power about the public policy decisions that economically affect our community and entrap our children in poverty. If we are truly interested in empowering our community, we must be willing to fully invest ourselves into the lives of our children and families thereby enhancing the lives of all of us. Regardless of the attacks, I will not give up the fight. I will continue to fight until the job is done, and there is no longer any reason to fight.

I sincerely believe Matthew 25:40, ". . . Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

I truly believe that vulnerable families, youth and women are the least of these. And I step up to the plate to stand up and fight for them. It is as essential that I do this as it is that I breathe.

Her opponent and current juvenile court clerk Joy Touliatos declined an interview Tuesday regarding the resignation of Brooks' job at Methodist University Hospital.

A third candidate is in the race, Independent Morrie E. Noel.
