BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

More than 100 students and volunteers gathered Friday for the 2014 Cape Fear Young Adult Conference.

The conference was hosted by the Cape Fear Workforce Development Consortium and held at North Brunswick High School.

More than 80 participants ranging in age from 16-21 from New Hanover, Pender, Brunswick and Columbus counties participated.

They attended workshops on things like educational skills, survival skills, and career preparedness.

Conference participant Onzeka Turner said she's learned a lot of skills from these type of programs.

"How to open up and how to talk to people that's interviewing you as a normal person," Turner explained.

Turner said these types of programs have helped her land a job and advance her education.

Walker Biggs, a member of Cape Fear Work Development, said they want to prepare young people for meaningful careers and not just jobs.

"It's very important that we maintain working with our youth and getting them set up, because it's very important that they find something that they like to do and try to find a career in it, and we ned to encourage them to do that," Biggs said.

This is the 13th year for the conference.
