A 17-year-old girl has been arrested on several charges after she crashed an SUV with two young boys inside while trying to elude Phoenix police Friday evening.

The girl was released from a Phoenix hospital Sunday evening and was interviewed by police in front of her mother, Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

She was taken to Maricopa County Juvenile Court on two counts of child abuse, three counts of aggravated assault, including one on a police officer and two on the children, one count of escape and one count of obstructing a criminal investigation.

The series of events began Friday at a Phoenix mall when a police officer was asked to check on some kids believed to be in a hot car.

When the officer got to the car, the 17-year-old returned, became combative and was handcuffed, Thompson said.

She was able to slip her hands in front of her, get in the car, and drive off with the boys, ages 5 and 8 years old. The officer tried to stop her, but she punched him several times and he jumped off the SUV as she sped away.

Police didn't find her for hours until she crashed in the neighborhood near 49th Avenue and Heatherbrea Drive, north of Indian School Road, Thompson said.

One neighbor who didn't want to be identified saw the whole thing.

"We were out here taking down the pool table, and she was coming at a really high speed. And she started braking, and that's when it started twisting and rolling. And it went and hit that brick wall," the witness said.

The 5-year-old boy was released from the hospital, but the 8-year-old remained in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition, Thompson said.

The relationship between the teen and the boys is unknown at this time.
