ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported on Monday that the Browns are trying to sign Brian Hoyer to a contract extension. The quarterback is heading into the last year of his deal and will be an unrestricted free agent in March.
The 28 year old North Olmsted native and St. Ignatius graduate signed a two-year deal worth $1.965 million in May of last year. He is scheduled to make $1 million this coming season with incentives that could push it to more than $2 million.
Despite coming off a blown out knee, and the Browns using a first round draft pick on quarterback Johnny Manziel, Hoyer is first on the team's depth chart right now. He is expected to be their starting quarterback when the season starts, unless Manziel can stage an upset.
