ORWELL, OH (WOIO) -

Orwell Police say a 27-year-old woman has died and a man has been lifeflighted, following a home explosion on Montgomery Road.

It happened around 6:45 p.m.  People in the town of Orwell reported hearing the explosion miles away.

Officials say the residents had been smelling gas. When the man went upstairs to light a cigarette, the house exploded.

The house is completely gone. Smoke is still coming up from the ground. A car with the windows blown out is sitting on the property.

The Ashtabula County Coroner's Office is now at the scene.

Michael Mulholland said he knows one of the people injured in the explosion. He's known him since he was 13 years old.

"I'm pretty shaken up right now," said Mulholland. "I don't know how anyone can survive that," he said, pointing to the empty space where the house once stood.
