MEDINA COUNTY, OH (WOIO) -

Medina County Auditor Mike Kovack is warning property owners to beware of a hoax targeting homeowners. A Treasury Department scam is making rounds around the area.

Someone is calling homeowners claiming to be with the agency's legal department. The caller tells the homeowner there is a lien against their property and they should send money to fix the problem.

Auditor Kovack has sent out emails warning thousands of residents after he got several calls about the scam. He also decided to call the 800-number himself, posing as a homeowner responding to the call.

"They said if you have this amount you need to pay and if you can get it to us, it can prevent the police from coming to your house," Kovack said.

This is one of many scams trying to get a hold of your money. Residents are on alert of this scam. Auditor Kovack stresses not to transfer any money or give any information that would allow you to transfer money.
