Coach Pettine expected to name Browns' starting QB by Aug. 23rd
August 23rd is the Browns third preseason game against the St. Louis Rams.
August 23rd is the Browns third preseason game against the St. Louis Rams. Before this date, Cleveland will have officially named their starting quarterback. Will it be Brian Hoyer or Johnny Mansfield?
Head coach, Mike Pettine told the Akron Beacon Journal that he planned on having a meeting with offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan and QB coach, Dowell Loggains to discuss the competition of the two battling QB's. Though there is no actual set date on announcing the starter, Pettine was clear in saying that he wanted everyone to know who it was before the third preseason game.
"It's definitely still up in the air. It could be sooner, and that's something we're going to discuss in that meeting. It'll be before the third preseason game. I just don't have a date. I don't know if I'll set a date and kind of paint ourselves into a date, but it will be sooner than the third preseason game."
Pettine has high praise for both Hoyer and Manziel. And despite all the rumors surrounding Johnny Football and how he spends his weekends, the new head coach still had nothing but good things to say about the rookie. Pettine said that Manziel is focused, hard working, one of the best in the weight room, and ahead of the learning curve.
So now that Hoyer is back and fully healed from his season-ending knee injury last year, the two quarterbacks will have some hardy, healthy competition on the field; each will be able to really show their stuff.
Pettine went on to say, "We want to make it as open and fair a competition as we can. But you've got to be careful then, too, because you've got a guy that's potentially your starter, and you have supporting-cast issues, whether that's in a preseason game or whether you can control it a little better in practice. Then the issue that I talked about before is kind of finding that sweet spot date for naming a starter."
The head coach even left open the possibility that Hoyer and Manziel could both get a start in the first and second preseason games depending on their performances in training camp which starts Saturday.
"That's something that hasn't been decided yet," Pettine told ESPN.com on Monday. "That might be something that potentially could come out of the scrimmage (at the University of Akron on Aug.2) 'Hey, both are playing well, let's go ahead and let one start the game one start the other.' There are a lot of different ways we can approach it, but there will be a lot of thought to it."
