Mentor Police cite woman for leaving dog in hot car for up to three hours

MENTOR, OH (WOIO) -

Mentor Police cited an Eastlake woman after she allegedly left her dog in a hot car on July 18th.

Police said the dog was in the car for at least one hour, but may have been in the car for up to three hours.

Heather Vliek was cited for misdemeanor animal cruelty. She was in Mentor Municipal Court today.

Officers found the dog around 1 p.m. It was only 77 degrees outside, but police took the temperature inside the car and found it to be between 100-104 degrees.

The windows were only open a few inches and the dog was in distress, according to police.

Remember, the temperature inside a car may be 20-30 higher than air temperature. Never leave pets or children inside a car alone.
