BEREA, OH (WOIO) - When it comes to fundraising Diana Fretwell knows how to make it happen. The 62-year-old is a wife, mother, grandmother, business owner and breast cancer survivor. She comes in tops each year in fundraising for the Komen Race for the Cure in Akron.
"I have to do this..I have to show women out there that there's hope for them," said Fretwell.
She credits hope, love and the latest medicine for getting her through breast cancer. Fretwell never saw the diagnosis coming. She has no family history of breast cancer, even with six sisters.
"I thought I did something wrong. I thought I was being punished," said Fretwell.
The thought of punishment has been replaced with empowerment for her and those by her side.
Fretwell does fundraising year round, with events like their popular casino night. Come race day, her team Diana's Divas will hand over $13,000.
This breast cancer survivor is using Komen to help others, turning her pain into her passion.
Fretwell is especially motivated by a fellow patient and friend named Gloria. She didn't make it because she didn't know earlier there was help available. That's the kind of story Fretwell never wants to hear again.
