Tribe trades Cabrera to Nationals

The Cleveland Indians sent shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera to the Washington Nationals on Thursday for shortstop Zach Walters and cash.

Walters, 24, has split the 2014 season between the Nationals Major League club and their Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, NY. He has played in 32 games over two stints for Washington this year, appearing in 3 games at shortstop and third base and 1 game apiece at second and in left field (23 games as a PH). With AAA Syracuse he has hit .300 (71-237) with 18 doubles, 5 triples, 15 HR and 48 RBI in 60 games (.358OB/.608SLG/.965OPS). He is tied for 10th in the International League in home runs despite his seven-week stay in the Major Leagues. His .965OPS would rank second in the IL with the requisite number of at bats.

The Las Vegas, NV native attended the University of San Diego and was the 9th round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2010. He was traded to the Nationals the next June for Jason Marquis. The switch-hitter was named Washington's 14th-best prospect by MLB.com entering 2014 and has appeared in 40 games for Washington over the last two seasons. In 2013 at Syracuse, he led the International League in extra base hits (66) and was tied for first in home runs (29).
