Cespedes traded to the Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have traded Jon Lester, and Jonny Gomes and some cash to the Oakland Athletics for Yoenis Cespedes, confirmed by Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. With this trade Boston will also receive Oakland's balance pick in the 2015 draft as well.

Lester, 30, is 10-7 with a 2.52 ERA, and has 139 strikeouts against 32 walks in 143 innings this season. The three-time All-Star was 15-8 with a 3.75 ERA and 177 strikeouts in a total of 213 1/3 innings last season. During post season, he was 4-1 with a 1.56 ERA.

Gomes, 33, has been hitting a .234 with six home runs this season. He played with the Athletics in 2012 where he hit .262/.377/.491 with 18 homers in 99 games.

Cespedes, 28, is hitting .256 with 17 homers in 101 game this season. He is a career .262/.318/.470 hitter with 66 home runs since he has been with the A's and coming back to the MLB in 2012.

Cespedes is owed $10.5 million this next season and will then become a free agent during the 2015-16 offseason.

Lester is set to hit free agency after this season, and a trade is much more obvious once Boston was unable to come to a agreement on the contract extension.

The Athletics will not be able to offer Lester an offer after this season, so he will not be obliged to free agent compensation during free agency.
