Akron, OH (WOIO) - With the fall season less than two weeks away, the University of Akron men's soccer team is ranked No. 13 in the country, according to a preseason poll released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Tuesday.
Notre Dame claims the No. 1 spot after capturing the College Cup in 2013. The next four, in order, are Maryland, Virginia, UCLA, and New Mexico. UA plays host to Maryland for an exhibition match coming up on Aug. 18 and will travel to New Mexico for its first regular season game on Aug. 29.
The Zips, who won the Mid-American Conference Tournament last season for the second straight year, will officially hit the field for the first time for practice next Wednesday.
Fans can catch the No. 13 Zips twice before they head out west to start the season, first on Mon., Aug. 18 against Maryland and then again on Fri., Aug. 22 vs. Syracuse (receiving votes). Both of those games are ticketed events and will be played at FirstEnergy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field.
The 2014 season will be the second under head coach Jared Embick after the team 17-4-1 last year, ultimately falling at Marquette in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
