AKRON, OH (WOIO) -

Thousands of fans celebrated LeBron James at his royal homecoming Friday night in Akron. It was an exciting and emotional night for fans -- and for the favorite Akron boy in the spotlight.

James announced July 11 he was returning home to the NBA Cleveland Cavaliers this season.

Plans have been in motion for weeks for the public Akron event welcoming home the NBA star and two-time NBA champion.

The free event at the University of Akron's InfoCision Stadium and Summa Field was sold-out. Around 25,000 fans were expected, able to take advantage of two ticket releases through Ticketmaster.

19 Action News Reporter George Smith says around 5:30, hundreds already started waiting in line. He spoke with a couple of fans.

"It seems like it's probably going to be a mad house," said Nicole Ball, of Akron.

When asked why she made sure to attend the event, Christina Zwisler, of Cuyahoga Falls, had this to say: "I'm the biggest LeBron fan."

We also asked Zwisler how she felt about LeBron's return and how she felt the Cavs would perform this season.

"It's about time. We are going to be great!"
