Quarterback Cam Newton of the Carolina Panthers has been medically cleared per Head Coach Ron Rivera from his offseason ankle injury and is expected to play in the preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night.
"Cam is on track to do the things we need him to do now," Rivera said. "We've mapped out a lot of things. We're now getting to the point where the work load is going to increase and things are going to change and we're going to do things differently now.''
Taking it easy is the main focus at this point but with a whole new set of wideouts in Kelvin Benjamin, Jerricho Cotchery, and Jason Avant more practice to prepare with a band of new faces is definitely in order.
Rivera did mention that you may see them play a while longer than the second week because of the short turnaround of faces, then by the third week see the starters take on the most playing time.
"I'd hate to play half a game, than bam, on a short week we're traveling on Thursday, playing on Friday and expect the guys to play well ,'' Rivera said. "So we may play them a little bit longer than you normally would in the second game and not quite as long in the third game."
