LAKEWOOD, OH (WOIO) - Not long ago, Jessica Sayre weighed more than 400 pounds, not even thinking about an athletic competition.
Now she's teaching yoga in Lakewood and preparing to run her first marathon.
We visited her at Inside The Source Yoga Studio in Lakewood, where she was leading her evening class. She's days away from competing in the Gay Games marathon.
"I am so excited. It's unbelievable. I never thought that I would get the chance to do something so monumental," said Sayre.
That's because back in 2008 she weighed more than 400 pounds.
"I couldn't even walk for three minutes before without having to sit down," Sayre reminisced.
A heart attack in September of 2009 changed her outlook on life.
"It wasn't a very large heart attack but it was enough to scare me," said Sayre. "It was my motivation. It was the wake up call. It was like bam. I need to get up and do something."
And she did, Slowly but surely. Making exercise and healthy living a part of her life. She shed the weight by getting active and controlling her portion sizes.
In addition to running, she's teaching yoga and zumba. It took more than five years to lose 275 pounds. The marathon this weekend will be her first.
"If you don't work out. If you don't do it for yourself, what are you doing it for? You gotta be healthy for the things you do in life because you only get this one time around," said Sayre.
Sayre says she's not nervous about the marathon. She's just excited to be healthy and in the competition.
