WAUSEON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Scammers are calling saying they are from Farmers & Merchants State Bank, and asking for bank card numbers.

Wauseon Police were made aware on an F&M Bank phone scam when one of their own was called.

"They are not going to call and ask me anything on the phone by an automated person," said police officer Ken Blankenship. "F&M Bank is a local bank, we know everybody, everybody knows who we are they wouldn't be calling my cell phone."

The phone call has an automated voice, once you answer the phone the automated voice will say that your bank account is locked and in order to unlock your bank account you need to give them your bank credit card number.

"We have heard from several other people that they have received the phone call," said Wauseon Police Chief Keith Torbet. "We posted it on our Facebook page, were they have received phone calls but they have not replied to it."

Torbet says they have also been in contact with the bank.

"We have confirmed with the bank that it is a scam," said Torbet. "They have sent out an email to all their costumers letting them know that this is going on, but so far we have not had any victims as far as we can see."

Torbet says people should never give out their personal information over the phone. People should verify beforehand.

If you live in Wauseon and have lost money to this scam you can file a report with the police department by calling 419-335-3821. Torbet says you should also contact the bank.
