A man is behind bars waiting to face a judge, after police say he held his girlfriend against her will and assaulted her.

Around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Madison Township police officers were dispatched to assist an assault victim at a residence in North Madison. Upon arrival, they found the 25-year-old woman had visible injuries and appeared to be in need of medical treatment. The Madison Fire District responded and transported her to the Lake Hospital Madison Emergency Department with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigation revealed that the woman had been involved in an altercation with her 24-year-old boyfriend, Michael Schmitt, at their residence. Police say Schmitt allegedly assaulted her, threatened her with a gun and held her against her will.

Schmitt's vehicle was tracked to a residence in Fairport Harbor. However, when Fairport Harbor, Madison Township and Painesville police departments, along with the Lake County Sheriff's Office, responded, he was no longer there.

According to police, around 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, Schmitt turned himself in to the Madison Township Police Department. He was then taken into custody for domestic violence, aggravated menacing, felonious assault and kidnapping. Schmitt was booked into the Lake County Jail, where he is currently being held without bond.

Schmitt is scheduled to be arraigned in Painesville Municipal Court on Thursday morning.
