Car crashes into Spencer Township apartment complex

HOLLAND, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The Lucas County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a car reportedly crashed into the Oak Place Court Apartment Complex in Spencer Township around 3 a.m. Friday.

Eight families were removed from their homes while crews evacuated the structural integrity of the building. There is visible damage to the wall, which is bowing.

According to the sheriff's office, a red minivan jumped the curve and crashed into a wall. On the other side of that wall is a 1-year-old's room.

Nicole Thayer says she woke up to go to the bathroom and took her daughter out of her crib to change her. That's when the vehicle slammed into her apartment. She says she has a message for the driver.

"You know what you are doing. Quit partying, quit drinking," Thayer said. "You are grown adults. Stop, look what you have done. You almost killed a child."

She says she is very thankful she woke up to change her daughter when she did.

"It's God or karma," she said. "Something told me to get up at that time. If not, she would have been hurt."

The driver took off after the crash. Detectives from the sheriff's office later found the van abandoned.

Red Cross was available to assist residents seeking aid. No injuries were reported.

Police are looking for the person responsible for the crash. Thayer says she thinks she know who is responsible and wants them to come forward.

"Please turn yourselves in," she said. "The law will get you. Just do the right thing and please turn yourself in."
