Cleveland (WOIO) - Mike Pettine delayed naming a starting quarterback on Tuesday, telling reporters in a conference call that the team isn't "in position" to decide on Brian Hoyer or Johnny Manziel yet. Pettine said the Browns coaches have been evaluating various positions throughout the day, and will meet on the quarterbacks on Tuesday night.
Neither Hoyer nor Manziel seized the moment, or the job, on Monday night, struggling while rotating series against the Redskins. Hoyer completed only two passes in five series, and Manziel, while finally finding the end zone with a shovel pass to Dion Lewis in the fourth quarter, went only 7 of 16 for 65 yards.
Pettine isn't ruling out naming a starting quarterback prior to Saturday's third preseason game against the Rams, but added he believes there's still plenty of time for the eventual starter to get enough reps with the first team prior to the opener in Pittsburgh, and said making the right decision is the priority.
