Michael Brown tribute planned for upcoming Salt-N-Pepa show in RVA

The unrest in Ferguson has gotten the attention of people across the country --- including here in Richmond. National Recording artists Salt-N-Pepa will be in Richmond this weekend for a big concert. There are plans for a special tribute to Missouri teen Michael Brown.

"And one of the things that we want to send a message out this weekend with this concert is that violence is not the answer," said event organizer Charles Willis.

Tense protests have rocked the town of Ferguson, Missouri since Michael Brown was killed by police earlier this month. Richmonders have taken to the streets for peaceful demonstrations, and now Willis plans to dedicate this concert to Brown.

"We are dedicating it not only to Michael Brown," said Willis. "But to those here in the city of Richmond. We need prayer for change. We need prayer for peace in our own cities. We have issues with our own youth and our own kids."

The stage is already set. 6,000 to 10,000 people are expected to gather on Brown's Island for the 80s was the Greatest concert.

"There needs to be some light put on this subject matter," said one of the event sponsors Omar White. "And what better platform and format to bring it than to have it done at 80s was the greatest."

White says they will have a special moment of silence for Michael Brown.

"We need to," said White. "It's our responsibility with the platform that we have this weekend, that we at least take the time to recognize the things that are going on in Missouri."

The concert is this Saturday at Brown's island. Gates open at 3 PM. The show starts at 5:30 PM.
