AKRON, OH (WOIO) - Akron residents might think they are seeing double after receiving their latest sewer bills, but what they are really seeing is nearly a two-fold increase in the rates.
A federal court recently ruled that Akron must upgrade its sewage system. But with no federal dollars available to fund the work, an estimated 199,000 residents must pay through rate increases.
Bill Ray owns around nine properties in Akron and says many of his tenants will have a tough time paying the increase.
"You take $40 here and $40 there and pretty soon, people are out of money," said Ray.
The sewage rate hikes were passed this winter. Residents started seeing the increases in their bills a few months later.
The cost to upgrade the sewer system is about $1.4 billion. Groundbreaking is scheduled to begin some time next year.
