Angels pitcher Garrett Richards will be out for six to nine months with a torn left patellar tendon, announced by the team on Thursday.

The injury occurred on Wednesday night against the Boston Red Sox while he was covering first base.

Richards who is planned to undergo surgery next week for the injury, has been placed on the 60-day DL.

Albert Pujols fielded a grounder by Brock Holt which was thrown to second base for a forced play with runners on both first and second. Richards couldn't make it, where he fell to the ground grabbing at his knee.

He was taken off the field, and went back to Los Angeles to be looked over by the team doctors, only to find surgery was in order.

"Obviously he's very distraught. He knows that it's not good" Scoiscia said.

With Tyler Skaggs already gone due to his Tommy John surgery, this news is just one more blow to the rotation.
