LAKE ERIE, OH (WOIO) - The body of a 33-year-old man from New York was pulled from Lake Erie just after 2 p.m. on Monday. His friends and family helped divers locate him.
19 Action News got a very up close look at the search and recovery of the man who appears to have drown in Lake Erie.
His body located in 25 feet of water by divers from the Cleveland Fire Department.
The diver's safety rope got tangled in logs under the water. He went down to untangle it and found the missing swimmer.
Assistant Chief Mike Darnell of the Cleveland Fire Department says "It's very difficult to find anything at the bottom of the lake. Even though we knew the location it took us hours to locate him."
According to investigators Sunday night the man and his girlfriend decided to jump off a boat close to shore on Whiskey Island and swim to the beach. She barely made it and he didn't.
For hours his girlfriend and family helped divers on the beach pinpoint where he went under. Their information was key to locating the missing man.
Assistant Fire Chief Mike Darnell adds, "We put a marker out there and the body was found right where the marker was and it was placed there with discussion from the family."
