AKRON, OH (WOIO) - Akron Police arrested a 19-year old man after he stole a police cruiser with a suspect in the back seat.
Police first arrested a woman who was driving without a license near South Broadway and Cedar Streets around 2 a.m. on Saturday.
She was then placed into the backseat of the cruiser, and the officer began the process to tow the car. The woman asked if the officer would get her cell phone out of her car, and when she went to get it, a man jumped in the cruiser and took off.
The officer ran after her cruiser, reached into the window and tried to stop the driver. He turned the corner, knocking the officer to the ground.
The man, identified as Shawn P. Douglas Jr., of Columbus, finally stopped the cruiser near East Exchange and Cedar Street.
Douglas then refused to get out of the car after several commands by officers. He finally exited the cruiser and had be tased in order to be arrested.
Douglas has been hit with many charges, including: felonious assault, unlawful restraint, resisting arrest, obstructing official business, failure to comply with police orders, escape, and disrupting public service. He was taken to the Summit County Jail.
The officer who was knocked to the ground sustained injuries to her shoulder, hip and knee. She was treated at the scene. The female suspect in the back seat was not injured.
