LORAIN, OH (WOIO) -

A Lorain bicyclist was life-flighted with critical injuries to MetroHealth Hospital after being hit by a car Wednesday evening.

It happened just after 6 p.m. near the intersection of Tower and Washington in Lorain.

Police say the teen bicyclist was not wearing a helmet and his name has not been released.

The driver, a 52-year-old Lorain resident, was eastbound on Tower when the accident happened. He ran off the road and crashed into a pole and traffic sign after the accident.

Mike Haggard's granddaughter saw the terrifying events happen.

"The car knocked the kid way up in the air and he came to rest on top of the windshield," said Haggard.

Haggard's granddaughter ran over to help and called 911.

"Said there was blood everywhere. She and another lady were holding the kid, comforting him and trying to help him," Haggard said.

The driver was interviewed and released by police. He is cooperating with police and no charges have been filed at this time.

"I can't really say much. He just pulled out in front of me," said the driver.

Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor. An investigation is ongoing.
