Akron city employee arrested for theft in office

AKRON, OH (WOIO) - A City of Akron employee was charged Wednesday with theft in office.

Dave Suncire is accused of getting overtime pay from the city, and at the same time receiving pay from another entity, for doing the same job.

Last year, Suncire was demoted from his supervisory position as the City's Sports and Information Coordinator to a Customer Service Crew Leader after he obstructed the internal investigation by independent Summit County auditors into the handling of cash transactions at the City's recreation centers.

Several employees resigned or were disciplined following that audit

"Suncire was disciplined last year as a result of an independent internal audit," noted Randy Briggs, Akron's Deputy Mayor of Labor Relations. "New allegations arose since that time, and the authorities have investigated and found probable cause for his arrest.  Suncire has cooperated by turning himself in, and we will now just wait and let the justice system take its course.  Until resolution of his criminal charges, Suncire will be put on unpaid administrative leave from the City."
