PARMA, OH (WOIO) - It is a crime that is hard to imagine, a mother slamming her 6-week-old daughter into a bed repeatedly, seriously injuring the baby. It is even harder to imagine that she did it despite authorities being alerted to her violent temper.
Jessica Gunderman has been charged with domestic violence, disorderly conduct and other violent crimes over the past few years. The father of three of her children showed us paperwork months ago from Lorain and Cuyahoga Counties where he tried to warn of her temper. Nothing happened.
Until this year, when she hurt her daughter Jessica Rose. Fracturing her skull. It happened only a month after she got probation and not prison for another outburst.
"You've given her a chance your honor, now we need to give her children a chance," said Assistant Prosecutor Jennifer Driscoll.
Gunderman said she was sorry and her attorney tired to minimize the case.
"The baby wasn't thrown on the floor. The baby wasn't thrown against the wall. The baby was thrown onto the mattress or the bed," said defense attorney Donald Butler.
That tactic didn't work. Judge Cassandra Collier Williams sentenced Gunderman to six years. A sentence some relatives didn't agree with.
