MEDINA, OH (WOIO) - The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk is Sunday, September 14 in Medina.
19 Action News Reporter Dawn Kendrick will play an intricate role during the event, introducing the community to founders and other participants.
The event retraces the steps of FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller who, on September 11, 2001, with 60 lbs of firefighting gear, ran from his firehouse in Brooklyn, through the Battery Tunnel, to the World Trade Center where he died along with 342 of his fellow firefighters.
The Foundation, created by his siblings in 2001, now raises funds to build custom "smart-technology" homes for the most seriously wounded soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. The Foundation's Building for America's Bravest program has finished ten homes, with another 26 currently under construction. An Ohio soldier from Marietta, Kyle Hockenberry, is a recent recipient of one of the homes.
The Medina event, one of nine across the country, will feature firefighters running in their fire gear just like Stephen Siller did in 2001. Each participant will wear a lanyard bearing a picture of one of the first responders killed on 9/11 as a personal tribute and remembrance.
The Medina run will have guests from the FDNY, the Foundation and Kyle Hockenberry, with his wife Ashley.
