SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (WOIO) - On Sunday, September 14, officers responded to a report of suspicious persons in the 1100 block of Krumroy Road at 2:45 a.m.
The officer came under gunfire as the chase continued.
Authorities say that at least four rounds were fired at the officer, who managed to walk away unharmed from the incident.
"As the officer took cover, he could apparently hear bullets whizzing by his head," said Sgt. Eric East.
The officer involved was unable to return fire.
Officers from the Summit County Sheriff's Office and the Akron Police Department responded and assisted in locating the suspects hiding in the area.
A .22 caliber Ruger handgun was also recovered.
"We could be standing here right now talking about another officer killed in the line of duty," said East.
Investigation determined that the suspects had also broken into several cars in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Officers arrested 20-year-old Mathew Singleton, of Akron, and a 17-year-old juvenile, also of Akron.
Both suspects were charged with felonious assault on a police officer, theft, possession of criminal tools, criminal damaging, and possession of a defaced firearm.
Both are expected to be arraigned on Monday.
