(CNN) - Thousands of troops may be on their way to West Africa. The president heads to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta on Monday, where he'll announce a new plan to help combat the Ebola epidemic. The U.S. will take a firm lead in managing the crisis. The U.S. Army will set up a command center in Liberia with an estimated 3,000 U.S. forces to lead the effort, along with 1,700 beds in Liberia alone. The help is needed, as currently, people wait for help in lines outside some treatment centers in Liberia's capital because there simply aren't enough beds. "There's no question we're chasing the epidemiology curve," Dr. Ian Norton of World Health Organization said. "We are behind the wave of disease at the moment, and our entire focus is getting ahead of the wave." Ebola has killed nearly 2,500 people in West Africa. In the three hardest-hit countries - Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea - the WHO says the number of new Ebola cases is overwhelming, and the response has been anything but. "Six months into the worst Ebola epidemic in history, the world is losing the battle to contain it," Dr. Joanne Liu of Doctors Without Borders said.
