AKRON, OH (WOIO) - A school bus driver was killed in a freak accident Tuesday morning, at charter school Middlebury Academy on Kent Street in Akron.
Fire officials tell 19 Action News the 51-year-old bus driver, Laura Zborowski, was conducting an evacuation drill and had all of the students get off the bus to do a head count.
The bus then started rolling and Zborowski managed to push a 10-year-old child to safety, before being run over by the vehicle. The runaway bus stopped when it struck a nearby tree.
Zborowski, of Akron, died at a local hospital from multiple injuries. No children were injured.
"I have no doubt in my mind or anybody's mind that she is a true hero," said Lt. Edwards with Akron Police.
Brandi Goostree was walking by the school and was first to reach Zborowski after the accident.
"It was amazing. It takes a strong person to do that. It makes you think if you would do that. Would you be brave enough to do that?" Goostree said.
The accident remains under investigation. It is not known at this time if the parking brake was activated.
The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy on Wednesday.
In the meantime, a memorial has been set up where Zborowski died.
