ELYRIA, OH (WOIO) -

A technical rescue team out of Lorain County rescued a worker stuck in a trench for over an hour.

It happened around 10:00 a.m. Tuesday on Georgetown Avenue, just north of Howard in Elyria and the man was freed around 11:30 a.m.

Scott Atkinson, 34, was buried up to his waist in a 12-foot trench. He was doing sewer work for a concrete company.

"From my understanding from the job foreman they were in the process of putting the shoring in place.  They had two pieces in about half way down the hole at the time if the collapse," said an official with the Fire Department. "He was trapped about to his waist, pinned between the clay and a piece of machinery."

His wife raced to the scene and was able to speak with him while he was still trapped. She says he called her before he called 911.

"I just though the was dying like someone was killing him. He was going crazy screaming," she said. "He wanted to talk to me and he wanted to talk to his daughter he was real scared."

The rescue team worked tirelessly to move buckets to clay that weighs 100 pounds per cubic foot.

Atkinson was taken to a local hospital, but did not have serious injuries. OSHA is investigating the accident.
