Exclusive video: Fire truck crash that has firefighters accused

19 Action News has obtained exclusive video of a Cleveland fire truck crashing into a big light pole, a crash that led to charges, accusing firefighters of covering it up.

The driver, firefighter Richard Nickerson, and his boss, Captain Ron Vargo, are both charged with falsification. Investigators say they lied about how the accident happened, and the video may help prove that.

Back in June, a ladder truck cut through a parking lot at East 116 and Buckeye. The video shows the truck driving straight into the light pole and knocking it over.

Records show the fire truck driver told investigators he had to swerve to miss another car trying to cut him off. Records also show the driver's boss backed up that story.

But as the truck hits the pole, the video does not show any other cars. You see an 18-wheeler turning around, but it is on the other side of a traffic island in the parking lot.

Despite the video, the firefighters are pleading not guilty in city court. And they've even given up their rights to a speedy trial.
