AKRON, OH (WOIO) - Navy Seal Christopher Heben was arraigned this afternoon in Akron Municipal Court on charges of lying about being shot in Bath Township this past March.
Heben pled not guilty to falsification and obstructing official business, both misdemeanors.
He declined to talk on-camera, but directed us to his attorney.
"I don't know what your backgrounds are but how many of you spent the military background that Chris did with devotion to his Nation and the citizens of this Nation. I think that sets him apart from many of us. For that reason he deserves the benefit of the doubt," said Attorney James Burdon.
Heben was arrested earlier this month by Bath Township police after a several months-long investigation revealed he lied about being shot in the stomach at West Market Plaza during the evening of March 28, 2014.
According to Heben's story, while following the suspects, he noticed he was bleeding, so he changed course and drove himself to the police department. There, Heben received first-aid treatment before being transported to a local hospital.
An investigation was launched even though Heben was the only one who had the details.
The Bath Township Police Chief told 19 Action News that they had suspicions about Heben's story from the start.
